Hard Water Spots Dulling Your Faucets?

Minerals in your water may be causing that once pristine faucet to look dull and spotty. Not only do those water spots make your faucets loose their shine, hard water build up can also impair the functionality of your fixtures. You don’t need to buy fancy cleaners to keep your faucets looking new and working correctly; simple white vinegar and a little elbow grease will do the trick.

Cleaning the Faucet (Bring Back the Shine): Soak a clean rag in white vinegar and drape it over the faucet, making sure that all parts of the faucet are in contact with the rag. Let that set for 30-60 minutes (longer is better). Then you’ll want to remove the rag and apply that elbow grease. But it’s VERY important to remember that you can easily scratch your faucet’s finish if you’re not careful. So be sure to use something non-abrasive like a non-scratch sponge as well as plenty of water because a dry sponge can scratch your finish as well. You may need to follow these steps several times, depending on how significant your build-up is.

Cleaning the Aerator (Fix the Flow): Next you’ll want to tackle your faucet’s functionality. If the water flow just isn’t what it used to be, odds are you have mineral build-up in your faucet’s aerator (i.e., the screw-on fitting at the end of the faucet spout). Typically, you can simply unscrew it by hand; just make sure your hands and the faucet are good and dry so that you can get a solid grip on it. If that doesn’t work, you may need to use pliers; but be sure to wrap your faucet’s aerator in a rag first so that you don’t damage it with your pliers. (If you’re not comfortable doing this step, feel free to give us a call and we can help.) Once removed, soak the aerator screen in white vinegar overnight to loosen the mineral deposits. Then replace the aerator, again just tightening it by hand.

With these simple tips, your faucets will be shiny and flowing once again! And remember, higher quality products are simply made better, and that goes for their finishes too. And you’ll find that reputable brands stand behind their products.
